Prior to his patent law career, Mr. Ma had been an experienced and accomplished computer engineer. From 1994 to 2006, Mr. Ma spent 12 years working or consulting for technology startups in Silicon Valley as well as established technology companies. During that period, Mr. Ma were part of teams that developed console video games for 16-bit SEGA Genesis and 32-bit SEGA Saturn, online bond-trading systems, real-time stock charting software, cross-platform web server plug-in modules for securing online credit card transactions, bio-informatics applications, and enterprise database applications for handling large environmental database for the federal government.
Below is a quick list of highlights of JD’s patent career:
- Served as lead counsel for four (4) Fed. Cir. appeal cases.
- Served as lead counsel for two (2) federal district court patent litigation cases.
- Served as lead counsel in three (3) IPR proceedings for patents (which JD prosecuted to issuance).
- Argued before the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals and the PTAB six (6) times.
- Procured dozen of patents, each issued following pretty much the entire life cycle of patenting, including collecting invention disclosure, conducting thorough prior art search (to gain understanding of the respective state of prior art), developing respective patent-drafting strategies in view of the respective state of prior art, drafting the respective patent disclosure and claims, and prosecuting the respective patent application until issued.
- Had over 100 issued patents under JD’s belt through prosecution.
- Drafted invalidity, non-infringement, and freedom-to-operate opinions for clients.
- Achieved reversals for clients at the PTAB for appeals from the Examiner.
- Filed and prosecuted over a dozen PCT applications, with favorable written opinions on patentability attained, for clients.
- Drafted various patent related agreements including licensing, joint venture, evaluation and confidentiality, product development and IP, agreements.
- Prosecuted patent applications in a range of technologies including: wireless communications (e.g. 3G, 4G/LTE), software (e.g. GUI, imaging, social media, browser plug-in, online games), electronics (e.g. PWM circuits, inverters, amplifiers), medical devices (e.g. endoscopes, syringes, smart medicine containers, smart stethoscope) and other mechanical and electro-mechanical devices (e.g. GFCI, can crusher, artificial turf, smart power management unit).
